The Rulebook
for BOB CUP 2025

In a cup, special rules apply to bouldering.
Since contests in halls are based on trust, rules must be clearly defined in order to be fair for everyone.

The Start

The start position of the hands is marked by two start signs, which also indicate the route number of the boulder.

In the contest, each boulder has a clearly marked start. How this is defined varies depending on the cup. In our BOB CUP, the start consists of start holds for the hands, which are marked as usual with start cards, and start steps for the feet, which are marked with tape.

After leaving the ground, competitors must assume the marked starting position and hold it in a controlled manner. Except for the holds defined as the start, no other holds or volumes (structures) may be touched with the hands to reach the starting position. However, the wall itself is permitted.

Except for the footholds defined as the start with tape, no other holds or footholds may be touched with the feet to reach the starting position. To reach the starting position, only volumes may be touched with the feet, for example, to reach the starting holds with a jump.

The start is judged as “incorrect” if, for example:

No controlled position could be achieved with both hands and both feet on the start holds.

Before reaching the start position with both hands and both feet, handles or other structures that are not marked as start handles were touched or used.

Flash

A flash is achieved when the boulder is successfully climbed on the first attempt. The boulder may not be tested before!

Conditions:
✅ The start was performed correctly.
✅ The top hold is held in a controlled manner with both hands (3 sec.) .

The Top

A top hold is marked by a top sign.

If a boulder has a clearly defined top hold, it must be held with both hands in a controlled manner. The top must be held in a controlled manner with both hands for 3 seconds. Only then is a route successfully completed. The exit edge must not be touched at any point before the top.

The Zone

In contests and championships, it is usual for each boulder to have a clearly defined zone. The position of the zone is determined by the route setter and is defined with an extra marking.

In the BOB CUP, the zone is also marked with a small card. The zone is reached when the marked hold is held in a controlled manner with at least one hand. A simple touch, e.g. by jumping and tapping, is not sufficient.

The zone also scores points in the competition if no top is reached and can therefore have an influence on the final ranking.

PLEASE NOTE: If the zone hold is skipped* and the top is still not reached, no points are awarded.
(*Climbed over it without holding or using it in a controlled manner)
